Junior dive mask

In this category you will find diving masks for older kids, also known as junior diving masks. Here, the requirements will often be completely different than for a diving mask for kids, as the older children's swimming skills are better. Therefore, a diving mask for juniors must also be able to fulfil more advanced needs.

That's why we at Watery.dk only have junior diving masks that meet our own high standards, as we know that a bad diving mask can quickly ruin a trip to the water.

Many hours of fun with the right junior diving mask

While a diving mask for kids is most often used for play, older kids will use it more for exploring the underwater wildlife. Therefore, it's also important to find a diving mask that can fulfil the needs of an older kid.

It should fit comfortably and be easy to adjust to accommodate the differences in head shape between a 12-year-old and an 18-year-old. Therefore, it's a good idea to find a junior diving mask that can be adjusted with a flexible and elasticated strap. This saves you from having to buy a new diving mask every year.

In addition, it's also important that the silicone skirt fits tightly to the skin so that water doesn't get in when they dive. As kids are developing a lot during this period, it's important to find a diving mask that has a flexible skirt so that it can mould to the contours of the face. This way you can be more confident that the goggles will stay in place when your kid dives with it.

However, the skirt should not only be practical to wear, but also comfortable. There's no point in a dive trip that ends after 10 minutes because the mask is uncomfortable to wear.

We would also recommend finding a diving mask with a nose so your kid doesn't have to worry about getting water in their nose. Since at this age they will most likely also have the swimming skills to dive effectively underwater, it would just be annoying if they got water in their nose every time they dived.

Make your diving trip even better with the right equipment

A diving mask can be combined with a lot of other diving equipment. The most obvious is, of course, a snorkel that can be attached to the diving mask. This way they can snorkel on the surface and soak up all the impressions of the underwater world.

Additionally, you can make it even easier for them to move both in and under the water with a pair of swim fins. This will allow them to explore much more without having to use too much energy to move their legs in the water. With the right technique, they will be able to move through the water almost silently and calmly. The biggest challenge is deciding whether they should be heeled or heel-less.

You can also go for a full diving set, but of course this limits your ability to customise your own, depending on your specific needs. It's easier to get it all together, but by buying it individually, you'll be better able to fulfil your own personal requirements for fins, masks and snorkels.

Whichever solution you choose, you will eventually find that your diving mask will start to fog up. They are anti-fog treated by the manufacturer, but this protection will disappear over time. Therefore, we can only recommend that you buy an anti-fog spray so that you can treat the diving mask yourself and extend its lifespan.

If your kid loves diving and snorkelling at any time of the year, the right wetsuit will be necessary. Especially when the water temperature is below 20 degrees, as they will risk hypothermia, which can lead to cramps and dangerous situations.

Are diving goggles the same as diving masks?

The short answer is: No. Diving goggles are a cross between swimming goggles and diving masks. They are most commonly used for open water swimming as they are streamlined enough to protect the eyes, provide a good visual outlook and fit close to the skin so they don't get dislodged by waves, for example.

You can use them for diving, but you should realise that they don't provide the same wide angle of vision and they don't have a nose. Therefore, you won't be able to see as much underwater compared to a diving mask and there is a risk of getting water in your nose.

A junior diving mask is therefore - as the name suggests - intended for diving and snorkelling.

Extend the life of a junior diving mask with proper maintenance

It is important to clean the lens of silicone residue when using your new diving goggles. Otherwise, you risk them fogging up. However, it is easy to remove if you rub the lenses with fine-grained toothpaste and then rinse well with water.

Chlorine and salt water is generally very hard on swimming equipment, and this also applies to diving masks. It is therefore important to rinse them well in fresh water after use, dry them well with a towel or cloth and let them air dry. If they are not completely dry when you put them in storage, you risk mould and fungus forming on the skirt.

That's why we also recommend washing them occasionally with a little Rodalon to clean them completely. Avoid using products containing alcohol, as this will dissolve the silicone. When the diving mask is clean and dry, we recommend storing it in a case to avoid scratching the glass.
