This is why you should use a swim cap for swimming

Is a swim cap just a swim cap? Is it something that old ladies wear on their head, so they avoid washing their hair?

You might think that. However, it's far from reality. A lot of swimmers use swim caps - both boys and girls - and there are many different reasons for this.

A swim cap "gathers" your hair, so it doesn't go down in front of your swim goggles or your eyes. Apart from this you also reduce the water resistance with a swim cap, because your hair sucks a lot of water. The swim cap from TYR is particularly great at helping you with that problem. And if you pick the right swim cap, it might just actually just look good - and be fun to use!

Is it a swim cap or a bathing cap?

There are many names for a swim cap, so what is the "proper" name for the neoprene/rubber cap you put on your head, when you go to the pool?

If you ask the older ladies in your local swimming pool, they will probably say that it's called a swim cap (it's used for swimming you know...). If you ask the many competitive swimmers, they'll probably call it a bathing cap - even though they strangely aren't bathing.

Regardless of what you call it, a swim cap and a bathing cap is the same thing.

The swim cap: A necessary swimming accessory

Particularly when it comes to girls, the swim cap is a necessary piece of kit. There's not really any way to swim without a swim cap, when the long hair goes down over the goggles. Even though this scenario isn't exactly the same for boys, many boys still swim with a swim cap at both competitions and cups.

You swim with a swim cap, because you swim faster with them. Without a cap, your resistance in the water will increase. And at the same time, a swim cap helps to keep the swim goggles in place. You might look a bit silly with a rubber hood on, but there are actually several obvious reasons for wearing them.

There is a wide selection of swim caps, so no matter if you are looking for one with a floral pattern, or a more neutral swim cap, you're bound to find something you like.

Pick a swim cap in the right materials for the most comfortable fit

Swim caps are made from different materials. All the materials have their own benefits. Below you can read about the different materials, so you can pick what best suits you.

Silicone: Is the material you will find the most swim caps in today. It's a very durable material, which gives the cap great longevity. The material provides optimal comfort, because it's pleasant to wear, and to put on and off. At the same time it doesn't pull your hairs too much, and can be used by everybody. A swim cap in silicone is particularly suitable for competitive swimming.

Latex: Is a lot thinner and lighter than silicone. This means that it isn't as durable. As such you should take great care of this material. The breathability is however, better, so it's optimal for warmer temperatures.

Lycra: Is the third material used to make swim caps from. It's a fabric, and as such it doesn't keep water out the same way as silicone and latex. With a swim cap in lycra, you also get more water resistance. It's a forgiving fabric that doesn't pull your hair when you take the cap on or off. This type is great for exercise, or for protection from the sun.

Here's how to easily put on your swim cap

When you put your swim cap on, you should be wary of sharp finger nails, jewelry or hair pins, since this can tear it. If you have long hair, you can put it up in a tight ponytail or bun. Here you can use an elastic without a clasp. Below you'll find four tips for easily putting on your swim cap:

  • Expand the swim cap with both hands - 4 fingers inside, and both thumbs outside.
  • Start at your forehead, and then pull the swim cap over the hair, down towards your neck.
  • Your swim cap should be tight, but it should also be comfortable, when you have put it on correctly.
  • If there is hair outside your swim cap, you can always stuff it under it in the end

How do you maintain your swim cap?

Just like with ordinary swimwear, you can prolong the longevity of your swim cap with some simple pieces of advice. Here are our three pieces of advice for prolonging the lifespan of your swim cap:

- Rinse the swim cap in cold water, and let it dry in a cool place after use

- Don't keep the cap in direct sunlight or alongside sharp objects

- When you store it, try to sprinkle some talcum or baby powder in and on the cap. This absorbs moisture, which can carry bacteria or give you a sticky swim cap.

What other swim gear do you need?

You don't just need a swim cap for swimming. There is a lot more essential swim gear than just this. Below you can find a short list of the most common swim gear for your swim practice:

- Diving fins

- Kickboard

- Finger paddles

- Pull-boy

- Snorkel

What swim gear you need, obviously depends on how you're training. If you're training swimming in open water, you'll need a great wetsuit. If you're also training for a triathlon? Then check out our category for wetsuits for triathlon swimming. Here you will find all our best wetsuits for your triathlon training.
