Swim bouy
Make yourself visible with a swim buoy / sea bag to avoid accidents in open water. On this page you'll also find swim buoys with practical features, such as compartments to store personal belongings or a water bottle for when you're out for a long swim in open water. We have a swim buoy or sea bag to suit all requirements and needs, so you're sure to find what you're looking for in this category.
When swimming in open water, it's important to make yourself visible to avoid accidents. You'll quickly blend in with the dark water if you're swimming in a dark wetsuit and perhaps wearing a black neoprene hood to keep warm. This makes it almost impossible for motorboats, kayakers, or paddleboarders to see you and take evasive action before they pass over you.
This can lead to some really nasty accidents, which can easily be avoided if you swim with a swim buoy / monkfish. They're also easy to put on and most people won't even realise they're swimming with it. This is because they are filled with air and made from a material that minimises water resistance.
Therefore, there is no good reason not to use a swim buoy / sea bag. This is true even if it's a short trip or close to land. Even here, you will still be able to bump into other people doing water sports. It only takes a split second for an accident to occur that could have easily been avoided with a swim buoy.
Some swim buoys have only one function: to make sure you're seen in open water. Others have a wide range of other functions. In particular, it's worth considering investing in a swim buoy/sea bag with cavities and pockets.
This is especially beneficial if you're going to swim long distances in open water. Even if it's in water, you will need to hydrate during your training session. And when you get thirsty, it can be a long way to the shore to get your water bottle. That's why you can, of course, get a swim buoy that can accommodate water bottles of different sizes. If you need a water bottle, you can find our selection right here.
You may also need to take personal belongings with you on your training trip, such as car keys, mobile phone, wallet, or something else. In this case, it would be a great idea to have a swim buoy that has a waterproof cavity or waterproof pocket, so you can safely carry your belongings without worrying about them getting wet… And then you don't have to worry about them being stolen if they're left on the shore.
If you're an open water swimmer - such as a triathlete or recreational swimmer - a swim buoy / anglerfish is an absolute must-have. Available in a variety of colours, all of which are easy to spot in open water, they are your first line of defence against accidents. Plus, most swim buoys come with reflective strips so you can be seen even in low-light conditions.
In addition, you can also increase your visibility with other equipment, such as a brightly coloured swim cap or an LED light for swim buoys. A swim cap can be a problem to wear if you are swimming in cold water and need a neoprene hood to keep warm, so a swim buoy is again the most optimal solution.
Otherwise, you can also use a wetsuit that also has bright elements in it, such as orange sleeves. This gives you an extra assurance of being seen on the water, as opposed to wearing an all-black wetsuit.
If you also need neoprene shoes to keep you warm, you'll find them right here. Or maybe a pair of neoprene gloves, which you can find right here. Then you can also extend your open water season. It's also important that you can orientate yourself properly while swimming, which requires a good pair of open water swim goggles.
