Competition Swimsuits

Do you love to push yourself at each practice? Do you love the fight for the first spot? Do you love to win? Then you should really get your hands on a competition swimsuit! It will not just make you swim faster, it will also give you an important edge over your competition. In any case you can find all the best and most popular competition swimstuis from TYR, Speedo and Funkita. It doesn't get better or simpler than that!

PS: Arena Carbon swimsuits and Speedo LZR swimsuits are by far the most popular - just a hint if you're new to competition swimsuits.

And if you want our completely independent recommendation of the best competition suits, we have made a top-5 ranking order over the best ones right here.

Video where Daniel tells about his recommendations regarding competition swimsuits:

Become a winner with a competition swimsuit

Now, the thing is that you probably already have a specific competition swimsuit, so the advice mentioned above is probably not all that useful to you. But if you don't have one right now, you should really hurry up, and get one (and you can easily do so, here at Watery.ie).

Because if you have ever tried losing by a hundredth or two to a cup? Try to imagine the feeling when you looked up on the scoreboard, and you saw that you have just lost by a hair. The feeling isn't great, right? But this could have been avoided if you had a special competition swimsuit - because they give you these famous last percentages.

What's the difference between a competition swimsuit and a regular swimsuit anyway?

You might be wondering why we are all of a sudden talking about competition swimsuits and regular swimsuits - they're both just swimsuits? And you're right - they're both swimsuits, but with two different objectives in mind. A regular swimsuit is used for swim practice, the beach and in the pool, and a competition swimsuit is used for competitions (hence the name).

And at competitions we, obviously, want to swim as fast as possible. And these special competition swimsuits can help you do just that. They are "faster" than regular swimsuits, in the meaning that they help you/the swimmer to swim faster in the water.

They do this by being more water repellant, so the water doesn't suck to the swimsuit, and by being made from special materials, that makes it more elastic and comfortable to wear. Apart from this competition swimsuits should fit a bit tighter on the body than regular swimsuits, making the "gaps" between the body and the swimsuit less, meaning that the water can't attach itself to the swimsuit as easily.

If you want help for this bit, we have written a great blog post about just this, right here

Considering the above, you should get a special competition swimsuit that you only wear at competitions / cups. And then you can use other swimsuits for practice, which could be a swimsuit with legs, to make it resemble a competition suit as much as possible.

This is to reduce the usage of the competition swimsuit, because the more you use it, the "slower" and less effective the swimsuit becomes. The "magic" will wear off over time, as you use the suit.

Should you have two competition suits?

This is a question we often hear - particularly from parents to younger swimmers - if a competitive swimmer should have two competition suits - "because the older swimmers in the club has that", as they say.

Typically you don't need two - you can easily get by with just one (we have done that for years), but as you get older and you start to swim both the qualifications and finals on the same day, it will probably be a good idea to have two swimsuits to chose from.

This is not least due to the fact, that when competition swimsuits get wet, they are (seriously) impossible to get into again, and then it can be great to have a different one to change into. However, this isn't something that should be necessary before you are 16-17 years old.

How often should you get a new competition swimsuit?

As stated above, the "magic" will eventually wear off, the more you use them. As such, the competition swimsuit won't have the same effect after a year, as it had in the beginning.

We have a rule of thumb, that when you have used a swimming suit for 12-15 cups, you should get a new one. After these 15 cups there pretty much won't be any effect left.
