Snorkel set vs. diving mask - what to choose?

First, let's get the difference between these two sorted out.

Snorkel sets (also called diving kits) are, as the name suggests, a whole set with both diving mask AND snorkel. These two can then be linked together so that you have a two-in-one mask.

This is particularly beneficial if you plan on snorkelling around for several hours in the water surface or below, and want to keep your eyes at the bottom instead of having to get up with your head to breathe.

At the same time, it is annoying to walk around the beach with the snorkel attached (however, in all our snorkelling sets below it can easily be disconnected).

On the other hand, a diving mask, as the name also proposes, is simply a diving mask without the snorkel attached.

However, a snorkel can for the most part be attached to a wide range of diving masks can easily be connected if you wish afterwards (alternatively just with an elastic band or similar).

However, if you want to have it all connected at once, you can also consider a full-face solution like here.

The reason for using only a diving mask is that you might not want to look like a total tourist (not that there's anything wrong with that at all), with the snorkel flopping around. You avoid this by just wearing the mask.

At the same time, it's not all too confusing to have to get up and breathe occasionally, so it's not a big problem either.

When getting the right snorkelling set, there are a couple of things you should pay attention to, so as not to end up with the wrong thing.

Firstly, look at whether it is a snorkelling set for kids or for adults. Because there is a fairly big difference in size. The mask itself can seem tiny if you get a junior snorkel set for an adult, and that's not all that great, if we must say so ourselves. And, of course, vice versa. As such you should be aware of whether you need a snorkelling set for junior or adult.

Another thing you need to be aware of is if the snorkel can be attached to the mask. It is obviously quite essential.
