PaddleBoard (SUP)

What is a paddleboard/SUP?

The word SUP is an abbreviation of the words "stand up paddle boarding" and is one of the most popular water sports at the moment, especially in Denmark, where interest has exploded.

There are many ways to use a paddleboard, which is also one of the reasons why stand up paddle boarding has become increasingly popular. In addition, a paddleboard can be used on lakes, bays, rivers and the sea.

Among other things, you can use a paddleboard for:

  • SUP leisure
  • SUP surfing
  • SUP racing
  • SUP touring
  • SUP fishing
  • SUP yoga

How to choose the right paddleboard/SUP for you

Allround board:

The Allround board is, as the name suggests, perfect for use in all conditions and is especially good for beginners who want to try stand up paddle boarding.

Due to their large size, they are stable and glide well on both flat and lively water, eliminating the biggest annoyance of SUP - constantly falling into the water.

An all-round paddleboard recommended for the first-time buyer or if you want to paddle with the family on occasion.

Here you can see our all-around board in action:

And see the specifications here:

Touring board:

Touring boards, also known as flatwater boards, are designed for calm waters without lively waves. These boards are equipped with a pointed front and a longer deck that allows you to cut through the water.

Surf board:

The surf paddleboard is smaller than other types in terms of both its length and width. This makes it easier to maneuver in the water, allowing you to ride waves.

Race board:

The race paddleboard is, as the name suggests, used for speed. They are longer and have a pointed front. This also means that it can be difficult to balance on a race board, especially for beginners.

At Watery.dk we offer inflatable all-rounders, which are also the most commonly used type of paddleboard and are ideal for beginners, the experienced or as a leisure activity for the whole family..

Fixed or inflatable paddleboard

Depending on your intended use of a paddleboard, you can choose between a solid or inflatable paddleboard, there are both advantages and disadvantages to each type of paddleboard.

A solid paddleboard is, as the name suggests, a solid SUP board, which is usually made of foam combined with, for example, fiberglass and epoxy. An inflatable paddleboard can be inflated and is therefore easy to transport wherever you need to go.

It is worth noting that a solid board, due to its construction, is more fragile compared to an inflatable board. In addition, it can be more difficult to transport your board.

The right size for you

The size of a paddleboard is based on both length and volume. In general, however, it is important to choose a paddleboard that suits your weight.

Find the right volume for you

Volume is measured in liters and is an indicator of the paddleboard's ability to float, this means that a higher volume means the board can carry more. Generally, a board that has a volume between 185-298 liters depending on how much you weigh. It is recommended that beginners who want to try SUP choose a paddleboard with a high volume as this provides better stability and buoyancy on the water.

We at Watery.dk have a rule of thumb to find the correct volume for you - it is recommended that your weight in kg should at least be doubled to find the correct volume.

For example, a 60 kg person will need a paddleboard with a volume of at least 120 liters.

Note again that a high volume is only an advantage for beginners, so a 60 kg person will also find it beneficial to use a paddleboard with a volume of 298 liters.

Find the right length for you

Generally, the length is chosen based on what your needs are for using the paddleboard. Here it is all-round, surf, race or touring and secondarily your weight. The length is given in feet and inches.

A short board allows you to better maneuver the paddleboard and is often suitable for surfing and for kids. A short board is classified as short if it is under 8' (243.84 cm)

A long paddleboard gives you more speed and is more stable. Most often the length is 10' to 14'. This is also why most people use a long board because of its stability.

At Watery.dk we offer a single medium/long model that is 10'6 (320 cm) and is suitable for beginners and intermediates.

Paddleboard for kids

Most kids are also able to practice stand up paddleboarding as long as they meet the minimum requirements for weight and height, for example. In addition, it is also important that they master the most basic stand up paddle techniques. The most important of these are being able to balance on the board while paddling, turning with the board and being able to get back on the board on their own.

There are 'paddleboard kids' categories, where the SUP board is often somewhat smaller in dimensions. This is of course very practical in many ways, but a paddleboard for kids can quickly become too small. Once most of the practicalities and some of the techniques are mastered, kids can quickly learn to master a normal-sized SUP board.

Paddles

Paddles are an integral part of the sport of stand up paddleboarding. A paddle consists of three parts, a handle, shaft and blade. The shaft is usually made of aluminum and can be adjusted in length.

When choosing your paddle, height is the determining factor and as a rule of thumb, it should extend to about your wrist from the ground.

The size of the blade determines how fast and efficiently you can paddle, this is also influenced by the type of SUP you practice.

  • Larger blades give you stronger strokes so you can move more water and cover longer distances.
  • Smaller blades are suitable for general use of a paddleboard, such as all-around and are preferable over a longer period of time. This is also preferred by beginners as they are less demanding to use.

Normally, paddles for inflatable paddleboards are three-piece and adjustable in length so you can customize it to suit you. This also applies to the included paddle on Watery.dk.

Fins

Paddleboard fins are an essential part of the paddleboard, without them your board would quickly turn sideways. The fins allow the board to sail straight and prevent the board from swaying from side to side as you paddle.

Depending on which paddleboard you have, there are different fin setups.

  • Single, which sits in the center at the bottom of the board.
  • 2+1 fin, one large primary fin in the center and two smaller fins on each side.
  • 3-fin (thruster), one fin in the center and two on each side, where all fins are approximately the same size.

For inflatable paddleboards, a 2+1 setup with a removable larger fin in the middle is most commonly used. Generally, you should wear the large fin unless you are in conditions with a lot of waves, such as whitewater paddling.

At Watery.dk our paddleboards are equipped with 2+1 fin setup.

Benefits of SUP-board

  • Stainless steel D-ring at the start of the base to secure the leash, so you can wear the other part on your ankle by your foot to ensure the sup board doesn't swim away

  • Large tri-fin set: one fin in the middle and two smaller fins on the back for exceptional stability on the water

  • Large EVA foam padding in the center of the front side to be split, which gives you a comfortable standing platform as well as a high degree of slip resistance. The fact that it is split in two also allows two people to stand on the same one at the same time.

  • A D-ring net is placed on the end where you can keep a water bottle, camera, food or anything else without it falling into the water

All necessary SUP equipment included

  • Storage bag that you can transport the board in. You can wear the bag as a bag or carry it in your hand.
  • Pump quickly and easily inflates.
  • Paddle for maneuvering in the water.
  • Safety strap that you fasten to the board and around your ankle, so you're always sure to have this board close by your side - even if you fall into the water.
  • Repair kit so you can repair the paddleboard yourself.
  • Head fin, which is removable
  • Strap to tie the board together when you're done using it and then put it in your bag.
