PaddleBoard (SUP)
The word SUP is an abbreviation of the words “stand up paddleboarding” and is one of the most popular water sports at the moment, especially in Ireland, where interest has exploded.
There are many ways to use a paddleboard, which is also one of the reasons why stand-up paddleboarding has become increasingly popular. In addition, a paddleboard can be used on lakes, bays, rivers, and the sea.
Among other things, you can use a paddleboard for:
The All-round board is, as the name suggests, perfect for use in all conditions and is especially good for beginners who want to try stand up paddleboarding.
Due to their large size, they are stable and glide well on both flat and lively water, eliminating the biggest annoyance of SUP - constantly falling into the water.
An all-round paddleboard recommended for the first-time buyer or if you want to paddle with the family on occasion.
Touring boards, also known as flat water boards, are designed for calm waters without lively waves. These boards are equipped with a pointed front and a longer deck that allows you to cut through the water.
The surf paddleboard is smaller than other types in terms of both its length and width. This makes it easier to manoeuvre in the water, allowing you to ride waves.
The race paddleboard is, as the name suggests, used for speed. They are longer and have a pointed front. This also means that it can be difficult to balance on a race board, especially for beginners.
At Watery.dk we offer inflatable all-rounders, which are also the most commonly used type of paddleboard and are ideal for beginners, the experienced or as a leisure activity for the whole family.
Depending on your intended use of a paddleboard, you can choose between a solid or inflatable paddleboard, there are both advantages and disadvantages to each type of paddleboard.
A solid paddleboard is, as the name proposes, a solid SUP board, which is usually made of foam combined with, for example, fibreglass and epoxy. An inflatable paddleboard can be inflated and is therefore easy to transport wherever you need to go.
It is worth noting that a solid board, due to its construction, is more fragile compared to an inflatable board. In addition, it can be more difficult to transport your board.
The size of a paddleboard is based on both length and volume. In general, however, it is important to pick a paddleboard that suits your weight.
Volume is measured in litres and is an indicator of the paddleboard's ability to float, this means that a higher volume means the board can carry more. Generally, a board that has a volume between 185-298 litres depending on how much you weigh. It is recommended that beginners who want to try SUP choose a paddleboard with a high volume as this provides better stability and buoyancy on the water.
We at Watery.dk have a rule of thumb to find the correct volume for you - it is recommended that your weight in kg should at least be doubled to find the correct volume.
For example, a 60 kg person will need a paddleboard with a volume of at least 120 litres.
Note again that a high volume is only an advantage for beginners, so a 60 kg person will also find it beneficial to use a paddleboard with a volume of 298 litres.
Typically, the length is picked based on what your needs are for using the paddleboard. Here it is all-round, surf, race or touring and secondarily your weight. The length is given in feet and inches.
A short board allows you to better manoeuvre the paddleboard and is often suitable for surfing and for kids. A short board is classified as short if it is under 8' (243.84 cm)
A long paddleboard gives you more speed and is more stable. Most typically the length is 10' to 14'. This is also why most people use a long board because of its stability.
At Watery.dk we offer a single medium/long model that is 10'6 (320 cm) and is suitable for beginners and intermediates.
Most kids are also able to practice stand up paddleboarding as long as they meet the minimum requirements for weight and height, for example. In addition, it is also important that they master the most basic stand-up paddle techniques. The most critical of these are being able to balance on the board while paddling, turning with the board and being able to get back on the board on their own.
There are 'paddleboard kids' categories, where the SUP board is often somewhat smaller in dimensions. This is of course very practical in many ways, but a paddleboard for kids can quickly become too small. Once most of the practicalities and some techniques are mastered, kids can quickly learn to master a normal-sized SUP board.
Paddles are an integral part of the sport of stand-up paddleboarding. A paddle consists of three parts, a handle, shaft, and blade. The shaft is usually made of aluminium and can be adjusted in length.
When choosing your paddle, height is the determining factor and as a rule of thumb, it should extend to about your wrist from the ground.
The size of the blade determines how fast and efficiently you can paddle, this is also influenced by the type of SUP you practice.
Normally, paddles for inflatable paddleboards are three-piece and adjustable so you can customize it to suit you. This also applies to the included paddle on Watery.dk.
Paddleboard fins are an essential part of the paddleboard, without them your board would quickly turn sideways. The fins allow the board to sail straight and prevent the board from swaying from side to side as you paddle.
Depending on which paddleboard you have, there are different fin setups.
For inflatable paddleboards, a 2+1 setup with a removable larger fin in the middle is most commonly used. Generally, you should wear the large fin unless you are in conditions with a lot of waves, such as white water paddling.
At Watery.dk our paddleboards are equipped with 2+1 fin setup.
