This is how a mono mermaid fin works

A monofin mermaid tail is made from the same material as regular swimwear. Unlike normal swimwear, however, it has a fin which can be fitted inside the lower part. This works like regular swim fins, except that there is only one. It's wider, allowing you to glide further when used correctly and swim twice as fast.

Mermaid fins for kids are only suitable for kids who are more than 6 years old. The reason why kids generally have to be 6 years old before the fin can be used is that there are a number of "rules" about when the kid is ready to swim with it. She or he must be able to:

• Float on their back for 30 seconds, to allow rest if they get tired.
• Do "the spiral" by turning in the water, and maintaining control.
• Swim 25 metres without help.
• Swim like a dolphin (butterfly legs) on their back and stomach. This is the prerequisite for moving around with the mermaid fin.

When your kid uses his or her mermaid fin in the swimming pool, it is important that there is an adult who keeps an eye out. As long as you remember to take these precautions, swimming with it is both fun and safe.
