How thick should your wetsuit be?

When picking your new wetsuit, you should pay attention to the thickness. It determines how warm your wetsuit is. Here you can see the three thicknesses which are the starting point:

  • 3 mm: This is the most commonly used for both triathlon and open water swimming. It provides the highest level of mobility while allowing you to stay in the water longer
  • 5 mm: This thickness is for use when training in open water in spring or fall. Here the water is not as warm, but the wetsuit still provides increased mobility and buoyancy
  • 7 mm: Do you hate the cold? Then you should pick this thickness. It's not very good for swimming in open water as it makes it difficult to move properly. It also creates a lot of buoyancy, which makes it difficult to swim. That's why a 7 mm wetsuit is often used for diving instead

You should also be aware that many wetsuits are actually about 5 mm at the legs, chest, stomach, and hips. This is to increase buoyancy and thus minimize resistance. The thickness around the shoulders is often less to increase mobility here. This is actually the most optimal composition for you, as it gives you both high buoyancy in the right places and full mobility at the arms.

The last thing to consider is whether you will be using the wetsuit for an Irish or international open water or triathlon event. Your wetsuit can only be a maximum of 5 mm thick. If it is thicker, you may be banned from swimming in it.

Should you choose a full or half wetsuit?

When picking your new Orca wetsuit, you've probably come across a question that many people ask: should you pick a full or half wetsuit? Luckily, you can find the answer right below:

Do you only swim in open water in Ireland or at an Irish triathlon or open water event? In almost 100% of cases, you should swim in a full wetsuit. It has both sleeves and goes all the way down to your feet. Such an Orca wetsuit gives you both the necessary warmth and buoyancy. You won't get the same with a half wetsuit to the same extent.

Are you swimming at a triathlon event in a warmer country or abroad? This is a good reason to pick a half wetsuit. Here your shoulders are free and it allows for more mobility. However, if it is not the case that you will be swimming in a warmer country, you should always choose a full wetsuit.

Use body cream or body glide to avoid friction when swimming with a wetsuit

Have you been following the slightly bad and inexplicable trend of using Vaseline around your neck and ankles to reduce wetsuit friction during longer swims? It doesn't help much because Vaseline slowly breaks down in water. Plus, it will also ruin your wetsuit over time.

Instead, you can use a product that is specifically designed to reduce friction when wearing wetsuits. This product is called Bodyglide, and it's actually made specifically to make your wetsuit swim more comfortable. You can also be sure that Bodyglide won't come off in water - or increase the degradation process of your expensive wetsuit.
