Baby swimming is a great idea, and with the right exercises and gear, it can be an experience that forms a tight bond. This is because you have a close, constant contact with your kid at all times during baby swimming. The age interval itself is between 0-2 years old, and you can already start when the baby is just around 2-3 months old.
The exception is, however, if the baby has been born prematurely. In this case you should be aware, that you must wait until 8 weeks after the original due date.
But when you have the basics in order, baby swimming is a great way for your baby to develop. Since it's freely flowing in water, this gives it the opportunity to train some different muscle groups from a pretty early age. Since the baby will always try to keep its head above water, it also exercises the neck muscles.
Baby swimming can however also be a bit overwhelming, when the baby has to put it's head under water. But you can feel perfectly safe, due to the fact that an congenital dive reflex will "close everything up". Remember that the kid has been surrounded by water for 9 months, and it still has that reflex after it's born.
But you need to maintain it, and precisely because of this, baby swimming is a great idea! Because if it takes too long between birth, and for the baby to experience water again, this diving reflex disappears, and from that point on, it only becomes more and more difficult for your kid to feel safe while being in water.
This way, baby swimming can help speed up your kid's development. And with the right exercises, you will experience a great development in motor skills, even when the baby is on land.
There are many excellent pieces of advice when it comes to baby swimming, but let's mention the more basic ones. It's important that you have the right kind of equipment with you - and lots of it! This especially applies to cotton towels, which can also take up quite a lot of room in the backpack.
With the right packing list it's easy to make things a bit more practical. This could be quick-drying towels, or a poncho that can wrap around the baby, and this way dry off all the crevices, and provide warmth.
Because it's important that your baby is dry when you're not in the water, but it's also important that he or she isn't freezing. This is also the most important part when you're in the pool for baby swimming.
Even though the water is often 32 degrees, your kid might still get cold, which you can see if it gets blue lips, a shivering bottom jaw, or a tremble. And in this case it's great to have a poncho with a hat, for when you get out of the water.
You should also keep in mind, that there are rules regarding jammers and swim nappies during baby swimming. In this case it's important to pick the right ones, to avoid leaks. There are different requirements in different pools, but in general it's the same guidelines that apply.
Baby swimming is one thing. This typically occurs in safe environments and with professional supervision and guidance. It's a different thing entirely to be on holiday with your baby. Because of course you would love to have your kid with you in the pool or the ocean, because is there anything better than to splash around with them, and experience that presence?
The protection must be in order, of course, and not least safety! In baby swimming everything happens in calm circumstances, and there is always staff at the pool, to ensure safety and comfort. On the vacation you're on your own, but there is a fix for that.
With an inflatable ring with a seat, you can safely and calmly swim around with your baby, without being worried about accidents. It helps stabilise the kid in the water, but also gives it the possibility of moving around freely, so the baby can propel itself forward by kicking its legs.
Since sun and UV rays are very harmful to a baby's sensitive skin, it's important to have some good UV protection. Hence why there is no way around a UV suit, and there are many different options. Of course there must also be room for a swim nappy and/or jammers.
When you have all that covered, you also have to think about protecting the skin in the scalp and neck, which means it's tough to ignore a sunhat, protecting from UV rays.
Just like at baby swimming, it's also important to keep the baby dry and warm, when the little bundle of joy comes up from the water. Here we can again recommend quick-drying towels or a poncho with a hat. It's easy, practical and doesn't take up much room in the bag.
