Why is it a good idea to use a swim cap?

A swim cap is not just for people who want to avoid getting chlorine in their hair or older ladies, but is used by swimmers for many different reasons. Therefore, a swim cap is also one of a swimmer's most important pieces of equipment, especially when it comes to swim training or competition.

Firstly, a swim cap will significantly reduce water resistance, as your hair is one of the biggest culprits for increased water resistance. This makes you more streamlined in the water, and you'll gain a lot of seconds if you wear a swim cap. It also holds your hair together so you don't get it over your goggles when you're lying down and swimming laps.

Secondly, swim caps come in many different shapes, colours and designs, so swimming with a swim cap can even be fun. If you're still not convinced, read our blog post about wearing a swim cap with Jeanette Ottesen.

Swim cap or shower cap - is there a difference?

A swim cap and a shower cap are the same thing, so it all comes down to semantics and not function. For older generations, it's often called a swim cap because you swim with it on. Conversely, many competitive swimmers will call it a swim cap, even though they do anything but swim with it on.

So you can choose what you want to call it, but there's no need to get confused about whether your cap is for swimming or for bathing. They are the same and therefore have the same functions, regardless of the name.

Choose a swim cap of the right material

You can get swim caps in different materials, each with their own advantages. That's why we've made a list of the main differences to make it easier for you to navigate:

  • Silicone: Is the material most swim caps are made of today. It gives the swim cap great durability as it is a very hardwearing material. In addition, they are easy to put on and take off and fit comfortably, giving you the utmost comfort. It also won't tear your hair like other materials can risk doing, which also makes this material particularly popular among competitive swimmers.
  • Latex: Is much thinner and lighter in weight than silicone, which also means they are not as hardwearing. Therefore, care must be taken when putting them on so as not to puncture them. On the other hand, they are much more breathable, making them suitable for swimming in high temperatures.
  • Lycra: Is made of fabric and will therefore not keep water out in the same way as silicone or latex. This also means that water resistance will be higher, but on the other hand, it won't pull your hair when you put it on and take it off. Therefore, a lycra swim cap is a good choice for protection from the sun.

How to put on a swim cap correctly

It's important to be careful of sharp nails, hairpins or jewellery when putting on your swim cap. Otherwise, you risk tearing it and rendering it unusable. If you have long hair, it's a good idea to put it up in a tight ponytail or bun and use an elastic band without a clip.

Once you've got the hang of it, here are 4 steps on how to put on a swim cap the easiest way:

  • Extend the swim cap with both hands - 4 fingers inside and both thumbs outside.
  • Start at your forehead, then pull the shower cap over your hair and down towards your neck.
  • Your swim cap should fit tightly, but it should also be comfortable once you've put it on correctly.
  • If there is hair outside your swim cap, you can always tuck it in at the end.

How to best care for your swim cap

There are some simple but very valuable tips if you want your swim cap to last as long as possible:

  • Rinse the swim cap in cold water and let it dry in a cool place after use
  • Avoid storing the cap in direct sunlight or with sharp objects
  • When storing it, try sprinkling a little talcum powder or baby powder in and on the cap. This absorbs moisture, which can lead to bacteria or a sticky swim cap.
