Mermaid tail for adults (Set)

Mermaid tails are for people of all ages who love a challenge in their swim training, or who have always dreamed of being a mermaid - or man. In this category, you will find the best mermaid tails for adults the market has to offer, so you can be sure to have the best experience.

It's not just a fun and different way to swim, but it's actually super good training for both the muscles, but also you coordination in the water. And actually, this is also one of the reasons why mermaid tails for adults have become increasingly popular.

What should you be able to do, to swim with a mermaid tail?

A mermaid tail is, both a very simple, as well as a complex piece of kit. It's simple in the fact that it really just consists of a monofin, covered with a mermaid- suit. And at the same time, complex because you have to have the right swimming technique and calmness in the water, to feel safe enough to swim longer distances with it.

This is particularly because a monofin works like swim fins - only with the difference that your feet are "locked" ind, and thus move as one. It may feel a little strange to swim like that if you have not tried it before.

In addition to this, your legs will be held together by the mermaid costume, which means that the entire lower body - from the hips to the feet - has to work together as a single unit. You will therefore gain momentum by moving the body in a unified rolling motion. It can start with the hands together in front of the head, through the body and all the way down to the feet.

Because of this, it is important that you can swim without having to kick separately with your legs or swim with your arms, which adds more requirements to your swimming skills. It requires a certain amount of technique and self-control, to be able to move through the water in one smooth and calm movement.

You will be able to test whether you have the proper skills, by swimming - as it resembles the same movement you also do when you swim with a mermaid tail. It's important to stay calm when swimming with an adult mermaid tail, so you don't panic if you feel claustrophobic in the mermaid tail. If you remain calm, and practice the right technique, you can easily get out of the mermaid tail if the accident were to happen - even under water.

To make it all easier, we have made a simple list, with the skills you should preferably master before you begin your mermaid tail adventure:

  • You should be able to swim butterfly - both on your stomach and back - and feel comfortable and secure in this technique. As such, you avoid the urge to kick separately with your legs, and panic when you feel the limited mobility. The legs must work as one unit.
  • You should be able to float in the surface for minimum 30 seconds, which gives you the possibility to rest in the surface, if you experience fatigue in your arms or legs.
  • You should be able to turn in the water, without losing control over your body. This way, you can better maneuver around, and avoid accidents.
  • You should be able to swim at least 25 meters without help or flotation devices.
  • You should be able to dive and hold your breath under water, since much of swimming with a mermaid tail is below water.

Apart from this, we would also recommend that you only use the mermaid tail in calm waters, such as pools. If you want to use it on open water, it shouldn't be in areas with a strong current or large waves. In these situations you will quickly risk losing control to unforeseen incidents, you can't impact.

swim buoys or a swimbag for open water swimming, to make yourself more visible in the water. This way you can avoid accidents with paddleboards, boats etc.

How to put on your mermaid tail

A mermaid tail for adults is very easy to put on, and it put on the same way as a mermaid tail for kids. It's important to make sure that your feet is placed correctly in the monofin, so you can move it correctly.

Since it's important to be able to quickly get the mermaid tail off, if there would be an accident, they typically come without straps or zippers, which also makes them very easy to put on, if you just follow these three simple steps:

  1. Pull the monofin's fabric over your feet, so it fits snugly around the ankles, like with other, normal swim fins.
  2. Then pull the fabric - that basically is the tail - well above your butt and hips, so it fits tightly. If the edge is too low, the tail will fall off as soon as you start swimming.
  3. Always put on the tail at the water's edge, so you're ready to get in the water right away. This way you avoid having to walk with the fin on, which can ruin the fabric and the monofin.

We recommend that you learn to kick off the mermaid tail off when you're in the water, before embarking on a longer swim, just to make sure that this part of the technique is locked down, so you can react instinctively.

This is why it's fun to swim with a mermaid tail

You don't just get the experience of being a "real" mermaid - or man, it's also a great and fun way to train core muscles and coordination in the water. Since you swim with your body in one movement, you will also work out different muscle groups in your body at the same time.

It will make you stronger and thusly a better swimmer, while strengthening your swimming skills in a more entertaining way than with so many other swim gear. As such, a mermaid tail for adults will also be able to handle the monotony of swim training, as it will be even more fun to swim lanes.

And due to the special but very holistic technique required, you will in no time discover that you will be much more streamlined in the water and have a much better feeling with your whole body.

A mermaid tail requires the right gear

The mermaid tail of course is one thing, and is an essential part of a mermaid tail kit. Another thing entirely, is all the other equipment that helps make swimming with a mermaid tail for adults easier and more fun. One of the first things we would recommend is swimming- or diving goggles. Since you move just as much under and above water with a mermaid tail, it is important that you can both see underwater and protect your eyes.

In addition, we would also recommend a nose clamp or earplugs if you tend to get water in your nose or ears when you have your head under water. It can be very annoying, and in some cases spoil the fun of swimming with a mermaid tail.

And last but not least, we would also recommend that you wear a swim cap, especially if you use it for swim training, and swim courses in it. A swim cap will both protect your hair and lower the water resistance when you glide through the water.

Take proper care of your mermaid's tail

Adult mermaid tails are in general very durable, but there are some areas where they're more fragile. The monofin in a mermaid tail is usually made from carbon fiber, and covered with neoprene. Since it is the neoprene itself, you attach the feet and the monofin to, it can be very fragile if you don't handle it correctly, even though the monofin may seem robust.

To make it easier, we have made a list of the advice you should follow if you want to extend the life of that mermaid tail:

  • Never stand on the monofin upright! If you need to put your feet at the bottom of the pool, it's important to stand with the monofin parallel with your feet. Otherwise you risk that it breaks, making the monofin a useless duo fin.
  • Avoid sharp and rough edges. Since the fabric of a mermaid's tail isn't that thick, it can quickly get torn, if you rub it over rough surfaces. The same thing applies if you jump around in it - for instance around the edge of the pool.
  • The fabric is made to be in both chlorine- and saltwater, but that doesn't mean that it won't see it's degree of wear. As such, it's important to rinse it out thoroughly in cold fresh water after use, and let it air dry.
  • If the cotton is mostly made from cotton, you could wash it in the washing machine at maximum 30 degrees. However, it can't handle the dryer, or ironing at too high heat.
