Diving gloves
It's always a good idea to wear diving gloves when diving. Even if the water is warm enough that you can easily do without them. They also protect against sharp rocks, mussels and other things that can cause cuts and scratches on your hands. On this page you can find diving gloves with different thicknesses and purposes. Some provide more propulsion and others are best for thermal insulation.
One of the most important functions of a pair of diving gloves is to provide good thermal insulation to help you retain heat. Since all diving gloves are made of neoprene, it's more the thickness of the neoprene that determines how well they retain heat. Therefore, on this page you will also find diving gloves that are up to 3.5 mm thick, which makes them most suitable for use in cold water.
However, you may not need a warm pair of diving gloves if you're diving in water temperatures between 20-30 degrees centigrade. Instead, you'll need a pair of hard-wearing diving gloves that can protect against cuts and scrapes on your hands.
You might also be more interested in getting good propulsion while diving or snorkelling. In this case, a pair of diving gloves that resemble swimming gloves would be a good choice, as their design provides extra propulsion compared to normal diving gloves. However, you should be aware that this requires good muscle strength in your hands and forearms, as they will put extra pressure on those muscle groups.
All the diving gloves you find on this page match our selection of wetsuits, which you can find right here. If you prefer a complete set of diving gloves, neoprene hood and neoprene shoes, you can find all our sets here.
It is important to remember to rinse your diving gloves well after each use. Salt and chlorine will soften the neoprene and dissolve the stitching if not rinsed off. The same goes for seawater or brackish water, where algae can build up in the fabric if you don't rinse them thoroughly after use. It's also important to rinse your diving gloves in cold fresh water, as too hot water can dissolve the glue in the stitching.
Finally, it's significant to let them air dry, but not in sunlight. Over time, the sun will also dissolve the glue in the stitching, making the diving gloves more leaky and prone to cracking. Therefore, it is also essential to repair any cracks with neoprene glue before they become larger and render the diving gloves unusable.
Remember that they must be completely dry before you put them away for storage so that mould doesn't form where they are wet.
