Wetsuit 7 mm

A 7 mm wetsuit is one of the thickest wetsuits you can choose, providing the most thermal protection. On this page you will find 7 mm wetsuits, each suitable for different water sports activities. It doesn't matter what you pick when that wetsuit is 7 mm thick.

Why you should choose a 7 mm wetsuit

A 7 mm wetsuit is ideal for the cold months in Ireland and especially for diving. They have excellent thermal insulation, so they can withstand even the lowest temperatures. Therefore, you should also consider what you want to use a 7 mm wetsuit for, as they provide high thermal insulation and may seem inflexible due to the thick fabric.

However, this doesn't mean that a 7 mm wetsuit isn't good for swimming in the sea, it's more about the temperature range in which you use it. If the water is above 15 degrees Celsius, you'll probably feel more comfortable in a 5 mm wetsuit. For example, if you're SUPing with a water temperature of 20 degrees, you'll probably feel most comfortable in a 3 mm wetsuit.

With that temperature range, a 7 mm wetsuit is best suited for water temperatures of 10 degrees and below. Of course, it all depends on how cold you are and whether it will be used for diving. In either case, we'd recommend also getting neoprene gloves, neoprene socks and a neoprene hood if it's not sewn onto your 7 mm wetsuit. You will be able to buy a full set right here.

A 7 mm wetsuit allows you to explore

Most people will use a 7 mm wetsuit for diving or UV hunting. Here you often use slow and steady movements to keep your heart rate down. Especially since it's important to breathe calmly. As a result, you don't generate a lot of body heat, and you will quickly become cold in the cold water.

Here, a 7 mm wetsuit will provide you with good thermal insulation so that you can maintain the right body temperature even with minimal heat generation. In addition, many 7 mm wetsuits are not equally thick in all areas. This is for the simple reason that they give you a higher degree of flexibility. That way, you won't be hindered in your movements by the thick layer of fabric.

Therefore, a 7 mm wetsuit also makes it easier for you to explore the bottom of the sea without feeling inhibited. The last thing you need underwater is a lack of flexibility and therefore body control.

If you use your 7 mm wetsuit for ocean swimming, you should realise that it is highly thermally insulating. This means you're more likely to overheat, which is always uncomfortable in open water. If you're using it for open water swimming, we recommend that you also wear aΒ sea bag so you can be seen more easily in the water.

Take care of your 7 mm wetsuit

It's important that you rinse your 7 mm wetsuit thoroughly after each use. Like so much other swimming equipment, salt, and chlorine can corrode and tenderise materials, and wetsuits are no different. Therefore, it's critical to rinse it off if you want to extend the life of your wetsuit. It's also best to rinse it in cold fresh water, as water with a temperature above 37 Celsius can dissolve the glue and make your wetsuit more leaky.

For the same reason, it is critical to air dry your wetsuit, but not in sunlight. Just like water temperatures above 37 Celsius, the sun will dissolve the glue, which in turn will make your wetsuit more leaky. This will ultimately increase water flow and thus destroy the thermal insulation function of a wetsuit. In the unfortunate event of an accident, cracks and stitching can be repaired with neoprene glue.

Finally, it is important that you let your 7 mm wetsuit dry completely before storing it. Otherwise, you run the risk of mould forming in areas that are not completely dry. This will also affect the functionality of your wetsuit.
