Earplugs - Recommendations
One of the biggest challenges for swimmers is water in the ears, which can eventually lead to “swimmer's ear”, an itchy infection in the ear canal. While this problem can be alleviated with a good pair of swimming earplugs, it does require that you can still hear your surroundings and orientate yourself. That's why swimming earplugs are not the same as normal earplugs.
They are specially designed to be used in water without absorbing it and swelling, while still allowing sound to enter.
In general, there are 3 types of earplugs for swimming:
- Mouldable: These come in small circles of silicone that you rub around in your hand to warm them up and then mould inside the ear to seal them off. So these are ones that need to be moulded with each use. The advantage is that you can mould them to fit your ear every time.
- Moulded: In this case, the earplugs are pre-moulded to fit the ear canal. These are made out of moulded silicone with a wing that fits inside the ears.
- Composite: These are the really expensive ones that are more tech-based. These are made up of several parts that are put together to keep the water out but still get optimal sound in.
