Carbon paddle

If you want the best the market has to offer, you need a carbon paddle for SUP. They are stiffer and harder in their materials, which means less friction and therefore better propulsion. However, not everyone will notice a big difference between the different paddles, as it depends on experience and load level.

Choose a SUP paddle of the right quality

Some SUP nerds will say that your SUP paddle is more important than the board itself, which may sound like a bit of an exaggeration. But it's not entirely off the mark. In fact, it's your SUP paddle that does most of the work and is therefore the one that is exposed to the most stress.

That's why you shouldn't choose a poor quality SUP paddle, as you risk it breaking while you're out on the water. And then it can suddenly be a long way to shore.

That's why we make sure that all our SUP equipment and SUP accessories are of the best quality, as otherwise you can quickly ruin your paddleboarding trip. In addition, it's also important to have a SUP paddle that is both durable but also lightweight - a mix you're guaranteed with a carbon SUP paddle. Of course, they also float in the water, so you don't risk it disappearing if you fall in the water.

One last thing that characterises a good SUP paddle is its grip. Since a lot of your forces are transferred from the grip into the water, it's important to have a good ergonomic grip. Otherwise, you risk hurting your hands, making it much harder to paddle and steer the board.

It can also be an advantage to have a SUP paddle that can be split into 3 parts, especially if you have an inflatable SUP board. This makes it easier to pack everything into your SUP bag, so you can carry all your SUP equipment with you. It also makes it easier to adjust the SUP paddle to suit your height.

In fact, your paddle should ideally be 20 cm longer than your height if you're paddling in waves, but up to 50 cm longer if you're paddling in calm water. That's why a split paddle is much easier to adjust than a fixed paddle.

Take care of your carbon paddle for SUP

Although carbon is generally very hardy, it's still a good idea to rinse it thoroughly in fresh water after use. Salt can soften most materials over time, which will eventually cause them to crack. This is especially true if you have a split paddle, where the joints are often the most vulnerable.

Once you've rinsed it thoroughly, make sure all parts of the paddle are completely dry before putting it in your SUP bag and storage. Although carbon doesn't rust, there may be other parts of your paddle that can rust. This includes the joint between the shaft and the paddle itself.
