How to take care of your snorkel gear

Table of Contents

Snorkeling is always exciting and fun - regardless of whether it takes place abroad or here at home - in most places there is always something exciting to look at and explore. In addition, it is always an advantage to have your own set, rather than borrowing or renting, as snorkeling takes some getting used to. And in order to be completely safe in the water, it is important that you know your snorkel set and can trust it.

It is, among other things, also because snorkel sets are almost a whole world in itself, with countless possibilities. Some of the sets can do something the others can't and vice versa. For that reason alone, we know everything about the feeling of finding the right snorkel set that can meet all your requirements. So when you have finally found the perfect snorkel set, it's just a matter of taking good care of it.

It is, however, relatively straightforward, but does require that you give the various parts the necessary care. In addition, there are accessories that can protect the equipment during transport and storage. And should the accident happen, some of the parts can fortunately be replaced with spare parts.

But before we get that far, let's start from the beginning - namely correct maintenance of the various parts.

Extend the life of your snorkel set with proper care

There can be some variation on the different snorkel sets - some only have a diving mask and snorkel, while others also have flippers. It doesn't mean a whole lot, since good maintenance of them is the same:

1. Rinse thoroughly after each use

The materials swimming equipment - and thus also diving masks, snorkels and flippers - are made of will eventually be softened by chlorine and salt water. However, this will not happen as long as it is in use in the water, but if you let it dry with chlorine and salt deposits, it will eventually destroy the equipment.

Therefore, you must always remember to rinse all parts thoroughly in cold fresh water after use. It will remove chlorine and salt so that it does not deposit and destroy the materials.

2. Dry the equipment well before storage

It is very important not to store the snorkel set while it is still wet. It will form mold and dark deposits that can both destroy the equipment and make it disgusting to use.

It is best to dry it well with a tea towel/towel/kitchen roll or let it air dry but not in sunlight. Sunlight can have the same effect as chlorine and salt!

3. Keep it safe

The best way to store your snorkel gear is to collect all the parts in one snorkel bag or a snorkel set. This makes it easier to hang up or store in a cupboard, so that over time you don't have to put other objects on top that could damage the equipment.

In addition, it should also be mentioned that the same 3 pieces of advice apply to brackish, lake and fresh water. In those environments, there is a risk of algae accumulating on the equipment, which can also cause deposits and destroy it.

But if you follow these 3 simple tips after each use, your snorkel set will last a long time.

Take care of your snorkel set with proper care

As already mentioned, it is best to store the snorkel set in a bag or net designed for it. However, this is not the only consideration you should take. Swimming feet are relatively hard and thus do not need special consideration, but snorkels and especially diving masks do in return.

Overall, snorkels come in 3 different variants: J-shaped, Semi-dry and Full-dry, and especially the last two have a special design that gives them their unique properties. They can partially or completely keep the water out of the pipe, but only as long as these functional parts are intact. If a piece of plastic breaks or a full-dry snorkel's closing mechanism tears loose, they quickly turn into a regular J-shaped snorkel. A pity when they were now intended for another role. This is why it is important to protect them from knocks and other scratches.

A diving mask is mostly only useful as long as there is a good view through the lenses. Even the smallest scratches can quickly thwart that, and they will then be more annoying than functional to snorkel with. Of course, this can also be effectively avoided by storing them in a case. So you always know where they are and most snorkel bags and nets also have space for the case.

Do not despair if the accident is over

No matter how well you take care of your snorkel set, it can get so worn or the accident could happen that something explodes or breaks. Fortunately, there is a solution for this, as long as it is the "real" things that break.

Because the strap for the diving mask can be replaced with in the and mouthpieces for snorkels can also be replaced. This also means that if the equipment does not fit quite right in size, it is possible to replace the parts with others that fit better. Pretty neat and smart, and then you don't have to buy a new diving mask just because the strap breaks.

With these simple tips and a little extra care, you can keep your snorkel set in good condition for a very long time. Or if you have become a little more hooked on finding the perfect snorkel set for you, you can read much more about it and be inspired right here.
