Just like with any other form of exercise, you're moving your body. And when you move, your body heats up, and the water inside your body evaporates and turns into sweat. But instead of the sweat spreading over your body and cooling it down – as it does during land-based workouts – it simply mixes with the water you're already swimming in. And since you're swimming in water, and sweat is also mostly water, you can’t really feel the difference between your sweat and the pool water. That’s why it can be a bit confusing: you don’t feel like you’re sweating – but you definitely are.
It might sound a little gross to think you're swimming in your own (and others’) sweat, but that’s just how it is.

And when I say you sweat a lot during a swim session, I really mean a lot.
For example, when I swim a regular two-hour swim training session, I probably (haven’t measured it, but just a rough estimate) sweat somewhere between 2 and 3 liters, depending on intensity and duration. So yes, you sweat just as much while swimming as you do with many other types of workouts – even though it doesn’t feel the same.

Of course, if you're just swimming calmly for half an hour, it's not nearly as much. But you're still sweating.

REMEMBER your water bottle – it’s your best friend at the pool

Now that you’re aware that you sweat while swimming, it’s also important to replace that lost fluid to avoid dehydration. That’s why I strongly recommend making your water bottle your new best friend at the swimming pool – filled with water or some sort of sports drink. That way, you can take a few sips every time you’ve swum a couple of laps. Just remember: you might not feel thirsty while swimming, but you still need to drink. Because yes – you are sweating.
