Mermaid tails - Recommendations

Mermaid tails are a fun and different way to swim, where fantasy and adventure meets the joy of swimming. However, they are not just for play and fairytale imaginations, as they are also an effective and tough way to train strength and swimming technique. That's why it takes a lot of practice to master and swim correctly with a mermaid tail. Once you've mastered the basics, a whole new world of possibilities opens up - especially for kids, but also for adults. 

Since the propulsion of a mermaid tail comes from a monofin, it allows for effective swimming workouts that particularly strengthen the core muscles. Whereas with normal flippers you create propulsion by kicking your legs in opposite directions, here they must work synchronised in a rolling motion. Therefore, a monofin also moves more water with each roll, which provides good propulsion but requires muscular strength.

Therefore, it is also an exercise to be able to master the calm rolls at a monotonous pace, which is good training for breathing, coordination, calmness, and technique. For this reason, it's a super fun way for both kids and adults to practise several swimming skills at once. However, it's important to know the following before jumping into the mermaid tail - this applies to both adults and kids:

• Can float on your back for 30 seconds - allows for rest
• Be able to do the “spiral” - turn around in the water and have full control of the whole body while doing so
• Be able to swim a minimum of 25 metres unassisted and without the use of equipment
• Able to swim using butterfly legs on both your back and stomach
