Diving Fins – Recommendations
Diving fins/snorkelling fins are not the same as regular swimming fins, since their function slightly varies.
Diving fins are often made from stiffer materials, as they are made for calm and longer movements. However, this doesn’t mean that they are all long and stiff as a board. Diving fins are also available in different lengths, each of which has its advantages.
One of the most obvious differences when it comes to diving fins, is the length, since some of them are very long, while others are the size of normal fins. This matters when it comes to the environment in which you will use them. The very long ones work well on the completely open water, where you do not swim along rocks or anything similar. In these situations the short ones, on the other hand, work really well. They are easier to steer and manoeuvre with, and at the same time lower the risk that you will bump them into rocks, cliffs, or the seabed.
In addition to this, some diving fins have a fixed foot, while others come with a heel strap. This has a major impact on their flexibility, fit to their feet and stability in the water. A fixed foot will transfer as much of the movement from the legs as possible, to the kicks of the diving fins in the water. This is not least due to the fact that they work more as one combined unit, together with legs and feet.
This does, however, mean that they are not very flexible and are more difficult to adjust to the fit of the foot. For this purpose, a heel strap gives a greater freedom of mobility, which makes it easier to make them fit the shape of the feet as well as possible, and provides a higher degree of mobility in the water. Therefore, you can often swim with them for a longer time.
