Daniel recommends:

What a pair of swim wings for kids should be able to do

The ideal bath wings or swim wings should act as a support for your kid when he or she is in the water, without hindering their movement and play. They should hold their arms up so it's easy to swim and splash around without their head getting underneath. Because when the arms are held up, the head is guaranteed to be held up too.

Our swim wings make getting around the pool easy and natural, and the kid doesn't pay much attention to them while they're in the pool. This is because the wings tighten well at the arms so they don't slide back and forth. At the same time, they sit comfortably and naturally without getting in the way of the movements kids typically make when splashing around. This way, you can be sure that swimming is not only fun for your kid, but also safe.

Of course, it's also important that your kid's swim wings don't contain hazardous substances and chemicals. With our swim wings, you don't have to worry, as they are produced by recognised swimming brands, all of which are committed to ensuring that their products represent high quality and safe swimming experiences. While it's hard to tell the difference between a quality pair of wings and the cheap ones you often find in beach kiosks on holiday, there's a world of difference when you put them to use.

The right swim wings for the right age

It's important to remember that swim wings are not a life-saving device, but a buoyancy aid. So while they provide good buoyancy, they don't work like a lifejacket. That's why it's also important to follow the instructions regarding weight and size. If the swim wings don't have enough capacity to give your kid the right buoyancy aid, it's usually because the kid weighs more than the buoyancy they can provide.

Swim wings for kids who are 1 year old usually have a weight rating of 0-11kg. At this age, it is most important that they can keep the kid's head above water, as motor skills are rarely developed enough at this age to need technical swimming support.

However, this changes when the kid turns 2 years old. This group is more tricky, as there can be a big difference in age and weight from kid to kid. Swim wings for a 2-year-old will usually have a weight indication of 15-30 kg. The most important thing here is not to exceed the upper weight limit. This can have the consequence that the swim wings become a hindrance rather than a help. However, all swim wings in this weight class should be able to support a 2-year-old kid for many years to come.

Therefore, this is also the weight class that a 3-year-old kid ends up in. However, you should be aware that swim wings for a 3-year-old should fit around the arm. If they are too loose, they will slip off. If they are too tight, they will stop blood flow. This is often the main difference between 2 and 3 year old swim wings, as the activity level in the water increases as the kid becomes more and more independent.

When should your kid take off their swim wings?

It can be difficult to know exactly when the future super swimmer is ready to take off their wings. However, it's a good rule of thumb that it's best to keep the swim belt on rather than the wings. The belt holds the kid up to a lesser degree and thus doesn't create a false sense of being able to swim.

At the same time, it doesn't block movement, making it easier to learn the strokes. It may make sense to use both at the beginning of their swimming career, and it's important to only take off one item at a time so that your kid doesn't suddenly feel like it's impossible to keep their head above the water.

If your kid is a team swimmer, it's typically a good idea to take off the wings while he or she is still in a splash class. When it's time to learn how to swim properly, swim wings will usually get in the way. They're a great support when your kid is getting used to the pool, but in the long run, it's important that your kid feels comfortable in the water without them.

It's always a good idea to consult the coach of your kid's class if you're unsure. He or she knows a lot about what is safest and most effective for learning to swim at an early age.

The age at which little ones are ready to put on their swim wings varies greatly. Every kid is different, and of course you should always take into account what you think is right for them. As a guide, however, 4 years is a good age to start. Kids at this age are in many cases ready to learn some basic swimming and floating techniques that can help them stay afloat because their motor skills are better than, for example, a 3-year-old's..

How to take care of them

To get the most out of your swing arms, it's important to treat them properly. They will last longer if you remember to dry them after use. This will prevent moisture and, in the long run, mould. It's also important to store them in a dry and dark place when not in use. It's a good idea to let them dry out completely and then put them in a closet or drawer - especially if they won't be used again the following week.

The sun can bleach the wings a lot and heat up the plastic of the inflatable wings, shortening their lifespan, so it makes sense to keep them in the dark. If you take the right precautions, they can be used for many years.

If you buy the Malmsten swim wings, which are made of foam, it's a good idea to be aware of whether your kid bites them. It is quite common for younger kids to want to sink their teeth into the soft material, and it is difficult to do anything about this tendency. However, you can prevent major damage to the swim wings by gluing them together with a dab of waterproof glue or by cutting off the loose foam once the damage is done.

This way you can ensure that the hole doesn't get any bigger than necessary. Considering these factors, a pair of Malmsten swim wings are a great pair of wings for the little one.

Alternatives to swim wings

Not everyone may find that swim wings are enough to hold their kid up. It could also be that your child doesn't like swimming with them, as they can restrict their freedom of movement. In this case, a swim vest would be an obvious alternative.

Swim wings may not be enough to maintain a correct body position in the water, in which case a pair of swim wings can be combined with a swim belt. The wings keep the head above water and lift the lower body, making it easier for the kid to move in the water.
