Travel towels

A microfiber travel towel is almost a must when you're going on a trip. They dry quickly, have high absorbency, and are lightweight. This means a microfiber travel towel doesn't take up much space in your suitcase, and since they dry faster, you avoid putting a wet towel in your travel bag.

Why you should choose quick-drying travel towels

There are many good reasons to prefer a microfiber travel towel over a cotton travel towel. This applies whether you're on a package holiday or a backpacking trip, as it meets most needs you might have on your journey.

Many have probably tried taking a cotton towel to the beach, and it's immediately filled with sand. Especially when you get out of the water, dry off with it for the first time, and then lay it on the sand. Suddenly, it's quite uncomfortable to dry off with it, as the sand in the fabric scratches against the skin and sticks.

Moreover, it will be wet for most of the day, and if it's soaked with saltwater, it might not even dry overnight. If you're a backpacker and take a quick dip in the water, dry off with a regular towel and put it in your bag, you'll soon find it starts to smell.

You can avoid all these problems with microfiber travel towels, not least because of their fantastic properties:

  • Quick-drying in more than one way. Their high absorbency removes most water from the skin and quickly releases the water again, so it's dry and ready to use quickly.
  • Sand-repellent so you avoid drying off with a travel towel that feels like sandpaper. You just need to shake the towel or brush it off.
  • Microfiber travel towels absorb water three times faster than a cotton towel and can even hold more water. If it gets too waterlogged, just wring it out once, and it's ready to use again.
  • They weigh much less than cotton towels and therefore take up much less space. Easy to toss in your bag after you've dried off nicely.
  • It's 100% odor-free, as it doesn't absorb smells, even if you forget it in your bag for a while. Therefore, it doesn't need to be washed as often as a cotton towel.

Although a microfiber travel towel is unique in many ways, it's still recommended to dry off with a cotton towel when you're done in the water. In that regard, they just work best. It's therefore best to use a microfiber travel towel for those times when you just need to quickly get most of the water off your skin.

A microfiber travel towel is a great supplement to the classic cotton travel towel. You won't get completely dry in the same way as with a cotton towel, but you can be sure it dries faster, so it's ready to use again immediately. A cotton towel, on the other hand, will quickly become waterlogged and dry slower, which means it loses its ability to dry the skin effectively.

How quick-drying travel towels work

Normal cotton towels work by absorbing water from the skin into the fabric, where it holds onto it. That's why it can take a long time for a cotton towel to dry.

Microfiber travel towels, on the other hand, are made of polyester and polyamide, woven together with fibers thinner than a human hair. It's this special weaving that makes the towel much more quick-drying than traditional cotton towels. Essentially, a microfiber towel "brushes" the water off your skin, which means the fibers don't absorb the water into themselves but rather draw it to them.

For this reason, it's quick to shed water again. This is also because the material's fibers consist of synthetic materials that are naturally water-repellent. Therefore, it also collects more water droplets between the fabric fibers, which is also why it dries faster. However, this means that a microfiber travel towel won't absorb all the water in the same way a cotton travel towel would.

Most of the travel towels here on the site are made of durable materials, which means they are incredibly durable as travel towels. So if you're looking for something durable, microfiber travel towels are an obvious choice.

Find the size that suits you best

We have travel towels in different sizes, so you can find one that fits the needs you might have on your trip. Whether it's a travel towel measuring 160 x 80 cm from Watery or SummerSand or a 70 x 140 cm travel towel from Speedo.

Since even large microfiber travel towels don't take up much space - when rolled up - there's plenty of room to have several of them in your bag.

Most also come with their own pouch or with an elastic band you can tie around it, so it takes up as little space as possible. Otherwise, you can easily fit it into a swim net or a mesh bag. It couldn't be easier.

Suitable for all sizes in the family

If you have kids on holiday, as a parent you might recognize that they jump in and out of the water in a flurry. Especially when the water play really gets them going. Here, a microfiber travel towel will be welcomed with open arms.

Since they both absorb water better and dry faster after use, you don't have to worry about having enough dry towels with you. Therefore, it also works incredibly well when you just need to quickly dry the skin off from water. However, it's recommended to have a high-quality cotton towel ready for when the kids are finally done with the water after a long and fun day.

On the other hand, if you're an avid sunbather who just needs to dip in the water occasionally to cool off, it can be a really good idea to have a microfiber travel towel with you. That way, you can dry off with it and instead use your cotton travel towel to lie on when sunbathing. This way, you avoid lying on a wet towel or having extra cotton travel towels with you.

Similarly, you can greatly benefit from a bath poncho, which is both quick-drying, lightweight, and allows you to have your hands free. That's why a bath poncho for kids is also fantastic for families with children.

How to wash and maintain your microfiber travel towel best

If you want to get the maximum absorbency from your microfiber travel towels, we recommend washing them 1-2 times before using them. Since they're made of synthetic materials, they require different washing instructions than those for cotton towels. For example, they can't withstand high heat, which means they can't be boiled or tumble-dried at high temperatures.

To make it more manageable, you can list the washing instructions as follows:

  • Can be machine washed at 30 degrees or lower temperatures
  • Not suitable for dry cleaning
  • Cannot be ironed, as it will burn the fibers
  • Can be tumble dried at low temperatures, but can easily air dry

Although these are the most general tips, different microfiber travel towels may have separate washing instructions. Therefore, we also recommend following them.
