Farsighted swim goggles in the right colour

Lenses in swim goggles are not just lenses, as they come in different colours. It matters significantly depending on which activity you need them for. So to make it a bit easier we have made a list of the different types and their advantages. 

• Clear lenses: Provide you with natural field of view and therefore they work well in not so well-lit conditions with unclear water. On the contrary, they do not protect you from strong sources of light such sunlight, powerful lamps, glare from the water's surface or sudden glimpses of light. That is why the are best suited for indoor use in moderate light conditions.
• Black/Smoke lenses: Is the closest you get to using sunglasses in the water. That is why you can say that they work best when water's condition is the same as when you would use sunglasses on land. Therefore, it also depends on your own sensitivity to light. The are particularly use by triathletes in open water, as the protect you from sunlight, flashes of light and glare. Despite this, the do have the disadvantage, that the weaker the lighting conditions, the less you can see. The work well both inside and outside. 
• Blue lenses: Has the same properties as swim goggles with clear lenses, but they do give your vision a blue tinge. It protects you from the water's surface glare and flashes of light, so you do not suddenly get blinded while you swim. You can also get them in other colours, but their functions are the same. 

So depending on the swimming activity you do, it's worth considering which colour of lenses you will benefit the most from. If you just want to protect your eyes and be able to see without being bothered by strong light, then swim goggles with clear lenses are worth getting. 

But if you want to use the in the open water and the pool without risiking being bothered by strong light, then it's best to choose a pair with smoke lenses.

A grip on the gear - and good maintenance

When you've finally found a pair of swim goggles with the correct strength, then it's worth taking good care of them. As it is not the same as ordering a pair of ordinary swim goggles, it would be very annoying if the lenses got scratched or if the elastic band breaks. 

That's why it's a good idea to treat them the same as your normal glasses. You will avoid many accidents by storing them in a case for swim goggles, when you're not using them. Then you're certain that they do not break, when you stow them away or transport them.

All swim goggles of good quality are treated with anti-fog on the inside of the lenses, which means that they will not fog up when you're using them. They effect gradually wears off as they are used, and therefore we also recommend that you treat them with anti-fog spray yourself. By doing this, you avoid them becoming useless over time - it would be annoying finally being able to see with a pair of farsighted prescription goggles, because they fog up making it difficult for you to see when you swim. 

In addition, we also recommend that you rinse them well in fresh water after each use, and make sure they're completely dry before putting them away. Chlorine- and saltwater can, in time, be hard on the materials, and if you do not rinse it off, it will wear down the goggles. This will end up making the skirt around the lenses leaky and the elastic band will break when you put them on.
