Do you often find that your swimming goggles fog up?

At Watery.dk, we know that there is nothing more annoying than fogging up your goggles during training. You can't see anything, you can't read the programme, the pattern on the bottom disappears and it does nothing for your training.

Not only does it take your focus away from what you're doing, but in the worst case scenario, it can actually mean you have to stop to clear away the worst of the fog so you can continue.

At Watery, we're just as tired of foggy goggles as the rest of the swimming world. But it's actually possible to protect your goggles from fogging, and it's surprisingly easy (and cheap). It could be with the help of anti-fog products and some good advice.

We have therefore gathered 8 do's and don'ts that can help you keep your goggles from fogging up.

➥Quick tip: Use this anti-fog spray to avoid foggy goggles. It's the only thing that works.

We'll start with the don'ts, which is a list of things you should avoid as much as possible if you want to optimise your vision through your glasses.

DON’T

1. Do not "rub" or rub the inside of your glasses with your fingers, fingernails, towel or anything else.
The inside of your glasses is where the anti-fog is located. If you rub or scratch the inside of your glasses, you risk wearing off the anti-fog or scratching the inside of the lens.

2. Don't use any kind of glasses cleaner.
Eyeglass cleaner is made of harsher chemicals and/or strong concentrations of rubbing alcohol. Glasses cleaner works well as an anti-bacterial spray to clean the outside of your glasses. But if you use the strong cleaner on the inside of your glasses, you risk chemically wearing out the anti-fog.

3. Don't use any kind of shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste or make-up remover to clean your glasses.
These "chemicals" have no business on the inside of your glasses. If you use waterproof mascara and therefore get marks from the mascara on the inside of your glasses, you can gently apply an oil-based make-up remover and swab by gently dissolving the mascara with the make-up remover and then gently removing any residue by running the swab over the affected areas.

4. Don't put your goggles on your forehead during breaks between sets.
Even though you're in the water, your body needs countless amounts of sweat to maintain an optimal body temperature. The sweat may not be noticeable when you're in the water. But the sweat from your forehead can actually react with the anti-fog on the inside of your goggles and ultimately separate the anti-fog molecules on the inside of your goggles.

5. Don't dip your goggles in the pool before putting them on.
Although swimming goggles are made to be worn in water, the anti-fog is unfortunately not very susceptible to chlorine. Like many other chemicals, the chlorine molecules can react with the anti-fog and destroy it.

We then move on to the do's, which is a list of tips on how to maintain the anti-fog on the inside of your glasses and prevent your glasses from fogging up.

DO’S

6. After swimming training, always rinse your goggles in cold, clean water.
Chlorine from the swimming pool can destroy the anti-fog on the inside of your goggles, as described above.

7. In general, always try to keep your goggles dry and clean.
If your glasses are dry, you will prevent the anti-fog from dissolving over time and mould-like conditions from forming on the edge of your glasses. By keeping your glasses clean, you prevent bacteria and other viruses from multiplying on the inside of your glasses or in the rim around your eyes. This will help you avoid both eczema and impurities.

8. If you still experience fogging, the protective anti-fog layer in your glasses is most likely worn out. You can use an anti-fog spray, and there are about 30 sprays in each bottle, each spray lasting about 10 sessions. That's 300 training sessions without foggy glasses!

If you need a quick emergency solution, you can try spitting in your goggles, which several swimmers have found beneficial.

That way, there's no excuse for fogging up your goggles! Happy swimming and good vision!
